By James A. McCray III
Prince George’s County, Content Manager

Contrary to popular belief, the last week of the regular season is indeed the first week of the playoffs.

For some teams, a win in week 10 amounts to a berth in its respective regional playoffs. However, for others, a loss in week 10 amounts to that of a playoff loss as that respective team’s season will be over. For two teams in particular, week 10 is to date the biggest game of the year.

“Some teams will be putting their equipment away after Saturday, and others will have another week of practice,” Henry Wise head coach DaLawn Parrish said.

Henry Wise (6-3) will visit Oxon Hill (6-3) Saturday in a meeting to determine the final spot in the 4A South regional playoffs. Both teams are coming off victories in week 9 as Oxon Hill defeated Parkdale 46-6 and Wise defeated DuVal 28-6 in a victory that gave Wise an opportunity at the final playoff berth.

“If we don’t win, we don’t get in,” Parrish said, “it’s that simple. It is going to be a play-off atmosphere Saturday. We have to play our best. There is no opportunity to get back a mistake now. This is not like a regular game.”

“This is the first week of the playoffs,” Oxon Hill head coach Walter Cross said. “This will be a tough test, our toughest test since [playing C.H.] Flowers.”

With such a reward as a playoff berth awaiting the winner, each coach recognizes the path to victory.

“There are three big keys for Saturday’s game,” Parrish said. “We have to control the line of scrimmage, offensively and defensively, limit the big plays, and have no turnovers.”

“We have to keep turnovers to a minimum,” Cross said. “We have to get our passing game going and move the ball consistently. Defensively, we have to contain [running back] Anthony Wright.”

In another key meeting Saturday that could determine a playoff spot in the 2A South, Frederick Douglass-PG (7-2) will visit Gwynn Park (8-1). With a victory, Douglass will in fact obtain the fourth spot ensuring it a playoff berth.

Douglass defeated Potomac (5-4) 29-0 last week as Gwynn Park also earned 29 points in its 29-0 victory over Friendly (7-2) last week.

In other matchups …

Friendly will look to hold on to its second spot in the 3A South as it will host Central (5-4) Friday night. Central defeated Fairmont Heights last week 40-0.

Eleanor Roosevelt (9-0) will look to complete an undefeated regular season with a home contest against Laurel (2-7) on Saturday. Roosevelt defeated Bowie last week 46-6, as Northwestern-PG (4-5) defeated Laurel 22-0 last week.

C.H. Flowers (8-1) will visit Bowie Saturday after the Jaguars defeated Suitland (7-2) last weekend in a thrilling 20-14 overtime victory and Northwestern will visit DuVal (5-4) Saturday afternoon.

After a 40-0 victory over High Point (0-9), Bladensburg (4-5) will visit Suitland Saturday.

As High Point and Parkdale remain winless on the season, one of the two teams is sure to end the regular season with a victory as the two teams will meet Friday night.

Fairmont Heights (0-9) will visit Forestville (4-5) Saturday afternoon. Forestville earned a 14-0 victory over Crossland (2-7) last week and looks for a victory to improve to .500 on the year.

Crossland will visit Surrattsville (2-7) as both teams look to close out the 2008 campaign with a victory. Largo (5-4) defeated Surrattsville last week 35-21 and will visit Potomac to close out its 2008 season.

tmccray@digitalsports.com

By James A. McCray III
Prince George’s County, Content Manager

Week 9 in Prince George’s County is the week of playoff positioning. Every team is well in its respective run for the playoffs as week 9 is viewed as the unofficial official start to the playoffs. A loss in week 9, and a team can lose one or two spots in its playoff standing. On the other hand, win a game during week 9, and a team can put a stronghold on its current position, if not better it. Two games highlight the week 9 schedules, and each will help put a fuzzy playoff picture more into focus.

C.H. Flowers (7-1) will host Suitland (7-1) Saturday in a key 4A South matchup. Both teams sit behind first-place Eleanor Roosevelt (8-0), Roosevelt representing both team’s respective losses, and Flowers narrowly holds second place over Suitland. The winner of Saturday’s contest will more than likely lock itself into a No. 2 seeding in the 4A South regional playoffs. Suitland will visit Flowers and is looking for its third consecutive win, after defeating Laurel last week, 34-14.

“This game is important, but like I tell my kids, it is not the end of the world,” Suitland head coach Nick Lynch said. “Without putting anyone else down, but if we take care of what we have to take care of, this game basically decides if we play Flowers there, or if we play them here [in the playoffs].”

As far as the mindset of his team, Lynch added: “I am very pleased with the team mindset. It would have been nice to be undefeated, but I think a loss gains our kids’ attention. … Right now, we are just going to take it one week at a time. … We don’t change our mindset or emotions based on the teams we play. We have the same emotions regardless of who we play.”

As the top of the 4A South plays itself out, the current top seed in the 3A South, Friendly, 7-1 after defeating Largo 27-20 last week, will visit Gwynn Park Saturday afternoon, as it looks to stay on the top of the tightly-contested 3A South.

“Saturday’s game is very important,” Friendly head coach John Morgan said. “[Gwynn Park head] coach [Danny] Hayes does a great job with that program and they always have a winning record. A win against them would kind of solidify our top spot. … With a seven-game winning streak it is easy to get a big head, and it is my job to not allow that to happen. I think it was good for us to have a tough game against Largo last week. That helped them see that we are not yet where we want to be.”

Gwynn Park also improved to 7-1 after its 30-6 victory over Surrattsville (2-6), and currently sits in the third spot in the 2A South with Patuxent (6-2, Southern Maryland Athletic Conference) and Douglass-PG (6-2) hard on its heels. With a win at home against Friendly, Gwynn Park will help further cement its place in the 2A South’s third-spot.

Douglass-PG will visit Potomac (5-3) Saturday as Potomac remains tied, record wise, with SMAC competitors Chopticon and Lackey in the 3A South and will have to win and get some help to earn a playoff berth. Potomac earned a victory last week to help its own case, 42-0, at Crossland (2-6), and will attempt to continue its winning ways against Douglass.

As Roosevelt, Flowers, and Suitland have the top three spots in the 4A South seemingly secure, the battle for the fourth and final spot is amongst three teams, as Oxon Hill, DuVal, and Henry Wise each enter week 9 with identical 5-3 records. The Clippers currently fill the fourth spot after its victory over Bowie (3-5) last week, 40-6. Bowie will host Roosevelt in week 9.

In a contest to remain in the playoff hunt, DuVal, fresh off its 55-0 victory over High Point (0-8), will host Wise, which defeated Parkdale 35-6 last week, in a critical matchup of two 5-3 teams. The winner will have high hopes of getting into the playoffs entering the last week of the regular season. High Point will visit Bladensburg as the Mustangs dropped to 3-5 after a 22-7 loss to Northwestern-PG (3-5).

Oxon Hill is set to visit Parkdale (0-8) Saturday afternoon.

“Every game from here on out is important,” Oxon Hill head coach Walter Cross said. “We have to win out to get in. … We are OK, and there are a few things we have to get squared away, but we are just trying to focus to make sure we won’t have any slip-ups. … We also are really focused on grades. Practice has been short so we can allow the kids to get their work done with grades coming out [soon].”

Central climbed to .500 (4-4) after its 8-6 victory over Forestville (3-5) and will host Fairmont Heights (0-8) on Saturday. Forestville will visit Crossland in its week 9 matchup.

Rounding out week 9, will be matchups of Northwestern at Laurel (2-6), and Surrattsville at Largo (4-4).

tmccray@digitalsports.com

By James A. McCray III
Content Manager, Prince George’s County

Week eight encounters:

Week eight. The week that will loom large in the minds of two teams and two coaches during the this particular practice week leading to the Saturday showdown between Charles H. Flowers and Eleanor Roosevelt in a 4A contest. And as week eight approaches, ironic, that in fact, it is win number eight that both teams are after. Both squads earned its respective wins this past weekend as Roosevelt protected its home field defeating Northwestern (2-5) 35-6, last Saturday. Roosevelt’s defensive efforts were led by Derrick Thomas as he pulled in three interceptions. As a unit, the defense totaled five interceptions as Dominic Shepard and Don Davis each gathered an interception as well.

Flowers goes into the week 8 battle with undefeated counterpart Roosevelt after it defeated High Point (0-7) last Saturday 59-0 to improve to 7-0. Its defense has only given up 26 points total on the year with four shutouts. The stingy defensive unit, however, will be put to the test as it will go up against a Raiders offense averaging 38 points per game. Flowers boasts a potent offense itself as the Jaguars are averaging 34 points per game on the offensive side of the ball, which should make for an interesting matchup of the two undefeated teams.

Another even matchup in week 8 puts two 3-4 teams together as Forestville is set to visit Central Saturday afternoon. Forestville looks to rebound from its 46-0 loss at Potomac (4-3) last Saturday, as Central (3-4) is coming off of a 46-14 victory over Surrattsville (2-5). Central looks to link together two straight wins for the first time all season, and the Knights of Forestville will attempt to end a three-game losing streak that comes on the heels of a two-game win streak earlier in the season.

Crossland (2-5) will celebrate its homecoming Saturday as it hosts Potomac, and will attempt to bounce back from its 41-12 loss last Friday at the hands of Largo (4-3). Potomac’s offense was clicking on all cylinders last Saturday as Jeramie Best and Devonta Tabannah led Potomac with two touchdowns each in its victory over Forestville.

Gwynn Park (6-1) was barely nudged by out-of-conference foe Urbana on the road last Friday night 27-28, and looks to rebound from its lone loss of the season Saturday as it makes the short trip to visit Surrattsville.

A handful of teams will be looking for its respective first wins of the season after dropping to 0-7 last week. Fairmont Heights, 0-7 after losing last week to Friendly (6-1) 32-0, will visit Frederick Douglass-PG (5-2) in hopes of getting the first win, and High Point will also look to earn its first win of the season hosting DuVal (4-3) scheduled for Friday night. Parkdale, also 0-7, will visit Henry Wise (4-3) Saturday afternoon in its best effort to earn its first win as well.

Friendly is currently tied with Huntingtown of the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference for the No. 1 seed in the 3A South which makes its game Friday night at home against Largo seemingly a must-win. After its strong offensive showing against Fairmont Heights last Saturday, Friendly will face another team that had its own respective good offensive showing in Largo, as it put 41 points on the scoreboard against Crossland on last Friday night.

Suitland (6-1) earned a shutout last Saturday earning a 48-0 victory over Bowie (3-4), and will attempt to put its defensive prowess on display again hosting Laurel on Saturday. Wise defeated Laurel (2-5) last week 43-0. Bowie will visit Oxon Hill (4-3) on Saturday as the Clippers defeated Bladensburg (3-4) 40-13 last Saturday, and Bladensburg will visit Northwestern on Saturday afternoon to round out the week 8 schedule.

tmccray@digitalsports.com

Prince George’s County
(Friday afternoon games)

Class 4A
C.H. Flowers 21, Oxon Hill 6
A week after edging Wise on the road by a single point, the Jaguars maintained their status as one of three unbeaten 4A teams, holding off Oxon Hill. A large reason to C.H. Flowers’ success has been its defense, which has allowed a county-best 26 points through five games. Against the Clippers, the Jaguars intercepted two passes while limiting the Clippers to 6-of-22 passing for 58 yards. With a road test at Northwestern and a home date against High Point both looking like wins; an Oct. 25 match up with Roosevelt could decide the 4A League title. Oxon Hill, on the other hand, has last three of its past four games to teams with a combined 15-0 record. Leo Gordon had 21 carries for 113 yards and the team’s only touchdown.

DuVal 49, Bladensburg 22
The Tigers got above .500 for the first time under coach Dameon Powell, earning a win over the Mustangs, who had been riding a rare three-game winning streak. In the past two weeks, DuVal’s offense has been a catalyst, averaging a county-best 44 points per game. With league lightweights Parkdale and High Point still on the schedule, the Tigers have an outside shot to sneak into the 4A playoffs for the second straight season. Meanwhile, the momentum stopped for Bladensburg, who are allowing a 45.5-point average in its losses and a four-point average in the victories.

Eleanor Roosevelt 24, Henry Wise 22
A week after accounting for six touchdowns, Roosevelt quarterback Mike Thomas tallied two scores, including the game’s deciding touchdown with just three seconds left in the fourth quarter. Penn State recruit Derrick Thomas, who recorded an interception, ran in the two-point conversion to give the Raiders a come-from-behind victory. Thomas ran for a season-high 80 yards on 14 carries and completed six passes for 90 yards, though it was his first game not to throw a touchdown. Roosevelt was down 14-0 at halftime, but intercepted Wise twice to cling to the home victory. Wise, however, lost its second gut-wrenching game in six days — both defeats are by a combined three points. Senior quarterback J.R. Burrell had 105 yards passing and two touchdowns, both to Anthony Wright. Wright added 119 yards and a rushing touchdown to account for all three Puma touchdowns.

Laurel 14, Parkdale 6
First-year head coach Brian Moore and Laurel earned its first victory of the season at home over winless Parkdale. After failing to score at Oxon Hill last week, the Spartans mustered two touchdowns to hold off the rebuilding Panthers. On the bright side, the Panthers did score their second touchdown of the season.

Northwestern-PG 12, Bowie 8
Six days after playing five overtimes at DuVal, Bowie managed another single-digit loss — its third this season. Amazingly, in the two Bowie wins, the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 66-0, while the three losses have been by a combined 10 points. Meanwhile, the Wildcats bounced back offensively after managing only a touchdown over the previous two weeks.

Suitland 56, High Point 0
With a monster home game with Roosevelt on the horizon, Suitland won its 24th consecutive league game, easily displacing struggling High Point. After inching past Oxon Hill in the home opener two weeks ago, Suitland has outscored its past two opponents 92-0. On the other side, High Point continued to struggle, getting blasted by 45-plus points for the fifth straight week. The Eagles are still looking for their first touchdown and have been outscored a county-worst 271 points.

Class 3A/2A/1A
Crossland 12, Central 7
Crossland had been outscored 68-0 in losses to Friendly and Douglass over the past two weeks, but rebounded with its second win of the season over improving Central. The Cavaliers were giving up 30.8 points per game, but tightened up to only allow one touchdown. Central, coming off a 30-0 win over Cardozo, failed to string together back-to-back wins for the first time since 2003.

Friendly 9, Douglass-PG 6 (OT)
Little-used senior kicker Mauriel Peacock booted a 21-yard field goal — the first in his career — in overtime to hand Douglass-PG its first loss of the season, while also giving the Patriots their fourth straight win. Friendly, which dropped its season opener in John Morgan’s coaching debut, was down 6-0 in the fourth quarter, but bounced back with Milton Gilchrist’s 20-yard touchdown reception from sophomore Sherrod Baltimore with 3:55 left. It was a frustrating day for the Eagles, who squandered two scoring chances inside Friendly’s 5-yard line and spent most of the game without seniors Christian Cook and Trey Massey, both of whom suffered first half injuries.

The Yellow Jackets continued to excel offensively, where they’ve put up a league-best 201 points. Forestville quarterback Caleb Gaines went 7-of-15 for 195 yards and three touchdowns and Antonio Belt had five receptions for 175 yards and three touchdowns, bring his season total to a county-best 11 scores. He also adding an interception in the losing effort.

With Douglass and Gwynn Park awaiting in the next three weeks, the Hornets and first-year coach Robert Harris desperately needed a victory. It wasn’t the prettiest of 31-0 victories, but John Morgan, Jr. and the Patriots coaching staff will take it. Friendly managed just 11 yards in the first half, eeking out a 6-0 advantage. But the Patriots wore Crossland down, scoring on several Cavaliers turnovers for 19 fourth quarter points. Friendly senior wide receiver Alex Blake scored the decisive touchdown with a 46-yard reception up the right sideline.

(Saturday afternoon games)

Class 4A
Bladensburg 12, Laurel 6
The Mustangs defense has only allowed 12 points over the past two weeks, just enough for Blandensburg to inch out its second straight single-point margin win. Laurel, perhaps, squandered opportunities, with penalties and turnovers spelling doom despite DeAnte Love’s emergence (123 yards rushing, one touchdown). The Mustangs should be 4-1 heading into a Week 6 road match-up with Wise.

Bowie 46, High Point 0
After managing just six points in the heartbreaking loss to Blandensburg, Bowie took out its frustration on reeling High Point. The Bulldog defense continued to be the staple, having allowed a 4A-county best seven points all season. High Point, on the other hand, has been outscored 155-0. It doesn’t get any easier as the Eagles have Roosevelt and Suitland during the next two weeks.

C.H. Flowers 36, DuVal 14
After back-to-back blowouts, C.H. Flowers muscled an improving DuVal team at home. The Jaguars scored on a pivotal play just before the half, with quarterback Dewayne Powell connecting with Lorne Green, Jr. to build a 22-8 first-half lead. Mike Mayo’s squad cruised from there despite a strong effort from Tiger quarterback Jesse Henderson (66-yard touchdown pass).

Eleanor Roosevelt 58, Parkdale 7
After edging Oxon Hill last week, the Raiders easily handled Parkdale. Senior quarterback Mike Thomas threw two touchdowns to Penn State verbal Derrick Thomas and even the backup, sophomore Jairus Cook, tossed a touchdown. Defensively, Isaiah Ross had 10 tackles, including two sacks, while Roosevelt totaled three interceptions. The good news for Parkdale? The Panthers scored their first twouchdown of the season.

Henry Wise 34, Northwestern-PG 7
The Pumas rebounded on the road behind senior Anthony Wright’s 23 carries for a career-high 240 yards and two touchdowns. Wise quarterback J.R. Burrell had 75 yards passing and a touchdown, while junior tailback Justin Coles contributed another 54 yards on the ground.

Suitland 20, Oxon Hill 19
In the most exciting game of the year to date, Suitland survived for the second week in a row thwarting a would-be winning two-point conversion and subsequent Oxon Hill drive — all within the last two minutes — to stay undefeated in its home opener. Despite the Rams inexperience on offense, Nick Lynch has Suitland poised again to be one of the league heavyweights. On the flip side, Oxon Hill’s Mike Wilson threw for 86 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns as the Clippers rallied against the league’s top two teams the past two weeks– only to fall short.

Class 3A/2A/1A
Douglass-PG 41, Central 0
Douglass-PG senior fullback Trey Massey celebrated his birthday with 74 yards on seven carries — three for touchdowns — to pace the Eagles to yet another win. Junior quarterback Richard Barber also ran for a score. The Douglass defense has only allowed 17 points through three games, with back-to-back shutouts on the resume.

Forestville 26, Largo 18
The Knights had to fend off a pesky Largo team hellbent on its first victory. Forestville junior quarterback Caleb Gaines completed nine passes for 130 yards, which included a career-high four touchdowns. Junior receiver Antonio Belt was the recepient of three Gaines touchdown tosses, including an insurance touchdown with 24 ticks left in the fourth quarter.

Gwynn Park 50, Fairmont Heights 0
The Yellow Jackets continued their winning ways, using an outstanding game by senior quarterback Lavaughn Hughes, who ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. Gwynn Park tailback Nygee Carmichael — who has dedicated the season to his late father — ran for a game-high 87 yards and a touchdown on a mere six carries.

Potomac 41, Surrattsville 6
Potomac quarterback James Seay went six-of-eight for 185 yards and two touchdowns through the air to complement his rushing touchdowns as the Wolverines built a 21-0 first half lead. Potomac did, however, allow its first touchdown of the season despite playing its third straight game on the road.
